Travel Guide - Getting to Trondheim

The city of Trondheim is situated on the Trondheim fjord in the middle of Norway in Northern Europe (see map). The location provides for quick and easy access by plane from the European Continent, the Americas and Asia. Norway is a small country and moderate distances also make travel by car or train interesting options.

Travelling by plane

Trondheim Airport Værnes (TRD) is the closest airport to Trondheim and is located in Stjørdal, about 30 kilometers to the north-east of the city center. The airport offers regular domestic flights to and from most major cities in Norway, as well as daily flights with service to a few European cities.

Travelling Non-Stop to Trondheim

Trondheim Airport Værnes (TRD) offers multiple daily flights with service to Copenhagen Airport Kastrup (CPH), Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS), and London Stansted Airport (STN).

Copenhagen Airport Kastrup (CPH) is the Scandinavian hub for Star Alliance, (with partner airlines SAS, United, Lufthansa, Air Canada and Air New Zealand), and offers excellent connections to most parts of the world. Most of the flights (on the Star Alliance website) between Copenhagen and Trondheim go via Oslo Airport Gardermoen (OSL). SAS Braathens provides non-stop flights from Copenhagen to Trondheim. Select Denmark - København (Copenhagen) as the departure airport, and Norway - Trondheim as the arrival airport.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) is the central European hub for the Skyteam Airline Alliance (with partner airlines KLM, Northwest, Continental and Air France), with even more connections to all parts of the world.

Non-stop flights between London (UK) and Trondheim are offered by the Norwegian airline Norwegian.no

Travelling through Oslo Airport Gardermoen (OSL)

Many international travellers to Trondheim go through Oslo Airport Gardermoen (OSL).

Oslo Airport offers connections to most major cities in Europe, in particular with frequent flights to the imporant hubs Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS), London Airports Gatwick and Heathrow (LGW, LHR), Copenhagen Airport (CPH), Frankfurt am Main (FRA) and Paris Airports de Gaulle (CDG) and Orly (ORY). In addition, Continental offers transatlantic flights to New York (Newark, EWR).

There are up to two departures with service to Trondheim Airport per hour in the daytime. Flight time from Oslo to Trondheim is about one hour. Airlines with service to TRD from OSL: SAS Braathens, Norwegian, and Widerøe.

Note: Due to Norwegian Customs regulations you have to pick up your luggage at Oslo Airport (OSL), carry it through the customs and drop it on a baggage belt for your final flight to Trondheim. Remember to book a flight schedule giving you some extra time (at least 1.5 hours) at Oslo Aiport (OSL) due to these customs arrangements.

Note: Some budget airlines offer international flights to Oslo taking you to Sandefjord Airport Torp (TRF) rather than to OSL. If your connecting flight to Trondheim is scheduled to depart from OSL, please factor in an additional 3 hours of travel time by bus between TRF and OSL (the bus drives via Oslo).

Getting from Trondheim Airport to the Conference Venue

Airport Shuttle
The airport shuttle ("Flybussen") to the center of the city corresponds with all flight arrivals, and is the simplest (and cheapest) way to get to city. On its route it passes most major hotels in city with the conference venue, Britannia Hotel, as the second hotel it stops by. If you are staying at a different hotel, ask the driver for guidance when you purchase your ticket.

The shuttles are lined up in the street just outside the arrival terminal. Tickets are purchased after boarding the bus, and the fare is currently NOK 70 (major credit cards accepted).

Taxi
Taxi from the airport to the city center is about NOK 500 depending on the time of day (night fares are more expensive).

Travelling by train

Going by train to Trondheim is easily combined with arriving in Oslo by plane as the train passes Oslo Airport Gardermoen on its way from Oslo to Trondheim. (Travel time from Oslo Airport Gardermoen is about 6 hours). See Norwegian State Railways (NSB) for more information.

Trondheim Central Station is right in the city center, and 500 metres from Britannia Hotel.

Travelling by car

There are a number of liners that will take you and your car from the continent (Denmark, Germany) or the British Isles to ports in the south of Norway (Oslo, Sandefjord, Larvik and Kristiansand) or west of Norway (Bergen, Haugesund and Stavanger). You also have the option of crossing the Øresund bridge from Denmark to Sweden and driving through Sweden to Oslo and on to Trondheim.

Driving Directions Coming from the South

The E6 highway runs from Oslo north to Trondheim.

When approaching Trondheim along E6, continue north by following the "E6 Sentrum" roads signs along "Holtermanns veg", "Elgeseter gt" and then "Prinsens gt" (gt is short for "gate" which means street, veg means road).
Turn right into "Dronningens gt".
After approximately 250 metres the Britannia Hotel will be on your right.

Driving Directions Coming from the North

This is how you would drive coming from the airport:

Go straight along the E6 (also labeled as "Innherredsveien")
At the roundabout with two different exits to the City Centre ("Sentrum"), choose the left exit (i.e., go almost all the way around the roundabout).
Turn right in the next roundabout and cross the bridge ("Bakke bru").
After the bridge, continue straight forward into the Olav Tryggvasons gt.
After approximately 400 metres, turn left into Vaterlandsveita.
After approx. 60 metres, turn left into Thomas Angells gt.
After approx. 30 metres, turn left into Nordre gt.
After approx. 90 metres, turn left into Dronningens gt.
After approx. 60 metres you will see to conference venue on your right.
